One-On-One with Rebecca Alston: Tough Stuff

With a successful career spanning over 30 years, there are many times when Rebecca Alston had to make some tough decisions but some of the toughest are not always directly related to her art. Alston shared with me some of the hardest things she’s ever had to do.

“Relationships are the most challenging. It takes so much out of your creative process and there has to be that focus and effort to keep relationships up. Being on your own can be difficult but there is a better chance of creating. Through my experience relationships can be a double-edged sword, they can be supportive but they can also disrupt your path.”

“There were many other life changing experiences in my life thus far. Moving to New York without having a set path was quite a challenge but I am so glad I spent 30 years there working on the edge, having my own studio and creating at a high level.”

“Now since I’ve just moved to Chicago, I’ve had the chance to refocus. I spontaneously moved here, similar to New York, and am exploring a new kind of life. I moved here for a change and less stress in my life. I loved New York but I had to clear the path. Moving to new areas will always be a challenge but it’s all what you make of it.”
